The scallop shell design on the badge of our club is taken from the heraldic arms of Reading Abbey founded in 1121 by Henry I. St. James, patron saint of the Abbey is shown traditionally as carrying a scallop shell as the sign of a pilgrim. Coins were minted in Reading Abbey during the reign of Edward III who was born in 1312 and crowned in 1327. The ancient lettering on the badge of the club is taken from these coins.
